Teaching Chinese as a Heritage or Other Language

Certificate Program

The California State University, East Bay Certificate in Teaching Chinese as a Heritage or Other Language benefits all levels of Chinese language teachers. Those who already work in the field will enhance their skills and broaden their range of employment opportunities, while those interested in entering the field will acquire the necessary educational foundation.

Offered in collaboration with the Northern California Chinese School Association, the program prepares students to teach Chinese in a variety of settings, whether those be language schools, after-school and weekend Chinese schools, universities and colleges, or businesses. Students who take advantage of the program will learn from respected teacher-trainers and linguists.

Classes are conveniently offered in downtown Oakland, making them easily accessible for those who live and work in San Francisco and the East Bay Area.

Program Objectives

  • To provide graduates a thorough and up-to-date grounding in Chinese linguistics, cross-cultural communication and Chinese language teaching approaches, both theory and practice.
  • To prepare graduates for teaching positions in community colleges, public and private universities, language institutes, Chinese community schools and after school programs, corporations and other settings.
